Charles Harper Poems Graphic
Here
to live here
deeply

to pay attention
close close attention
with all five senses
and the mystic sixth

to decipher
what is going on here
then refigure
again and again

to grasp firmly
but hold loosely
(in hand much less
than what is here)

to stay within
here’s boundaries
while on pilgrimage
to receding horizons

to range far
across earth and space
never leaving home
here

This poem's inspiration is from Henry David Thoreau who was once asked by a friend why he so seldom traveled from his home in Concord Massachusetts.  He responded, "Why would I leave Concord when there is a little bit of the whole world in Concord."
